A fire in Lagos has left a family terribly devastated after their six-year-old son died while sleeping in one of the flats.

On Tuesday night at about 9pm, the fire started and 10 rooms in the building located at 3, Ogunde Street, off Somori, Iyana-Ifako were said to have been affected. The child, identified simply as Abbey had two elder brothers who were rescued just in time as the door to their room was locked during the fire causing a lot of confusion as rescuers tried to get in.

According to Vanguard reports, one of the eyewitnesses said: “Their parents locked them inside and went out. Nobody knew where they went to. The door was forced opened and two of them rescued, though one of them was slightly burnt. “It was while they got outside that the rescued children said their brother was still inside. By then the fire had engulfed the whole building and nobody could go in again.”

The Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Rasaq Fadipe confirmed the boys body was recovered after fire trucks from Ilupeju and Ikeja responded to the distress call.
